Auburn product Paul Burnside was perfect in a 2-0 win over Front Royal on Saturday, June 3. |
Right-hander Paul Burnside pitched a perfect game in his first appearance of the season as the Winchester Royals shutout the rival Front Royal Cardinals 2-0 in a Valley Baseball League game on Saturday, June 3 in Winchester.
Burnside, a 6-4 freshman at Auburn University, did not allow a Cardinals hitter to reach base in facing the minimum 27 batters. The Montgomery, Ala. native struck out 14 to improve to 1-0 and record the second no-hitter in Royals’ history. A two-run single by first baseman Adam Cronk (Athens, Ga./Vanderbilt), a fellow Southeastern Conference athlete, was all Winchester would need to pick up the victory.
It was the first no-hitter in the VBL since July 25, 2005 when University of Arizona product Sean Jarrett struck out 11 and allowed three runners to reach via errors in Harrisonburg’s 3-0 win over Waynesboro.
