South Defeats North, 1-0

WOODSTOCK, Va.  - The North held the South to just three hits, but the South made them count in a 1-0 All-Star game victory Sunday night before 715 fans at Central High School in Woodstock.

Harrisonburg's Bobby Brown earned South MVP honors for driving in that lone run of the game with a sixth inning double to center. He finished the day 2 for 4 with the run batted in.

Brown's hit, off of Luray's Tyler Sanders, scored New Market's Richie Gonzales from second base. Gonzales had led off the frame by reaching on an error and moved into scoring position on that same error.

This offense, while not substantial, proved to be enough for the South. Six South pitchers combined to strike out eight North hitters and earn the shutout victory.

The North pitchers were possibly even better - all 12 selected to the game saw action in the contest and they combined to strikeout 13 South hitters. Woodstock, the host team, had its pitchers bookend the game and Ian Marshall struck out two in the first before Guido Knudson had one in the ninth.

Luray's Drew Martinez, who like Haymarket's Greg Hopkins and Front Royal's Steve McQuail had two hits in the game, earned North MVP honors by going 2 for 3 with a stolen base.

McQuail didn't leave empty-handed through, he won the Home Run Derby prior to the start of the game.

The night's final honor went to Justin Wilson from Fauquier, who won the league's 60-yard dash.
