Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic Roster Announced

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Valley Baseball League announced today its roster for the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic All-Star game to be played July 15 in Waldorf, Maryland.

This past winter, the VBL and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League agreed to stage a game between All-Star teams from their respective leagues with the Cal Ripken, Sr. League hosting the 2009 contest at Waldorf's Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Valley, which will hold its own All-Star game on July 12, used the two 28-man rosters from the VBL All-Star game to select its 28-man roster for the Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic. A committee consisting of coaches, owners and league officials selected a squad of 12 pitchers and 16 field players.

Because the league is holding its All-Star game on July 12 and has five make-up games scheduled for July 14, two pitching alternates for the Classic game were chosen as well.

All 12 Valley League teams are represented on the 28-man team and Staunton manager Lance Mauck has been named to run the squad.

Mauck earned the honor of coaching the first-ever VBL team because his Braves had a league-best 15-6 record as of July 5. Mauck will be assisted by Mike Bocock, Luray; Andy Chabot, Waynesboro and John Lowery, Winchester.

Regency Furniture Stadium, a 4,200 seat venue located in Charles County, Maryland, is the home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League. Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) will broadcast the event live in high definition.

In addition to the game, a Home Run Derby between the two leagues will precede the contest and the Cal Ripken, Sr. League will host a luncheon prior to the derby for all players, coaches and league representatives involved in the event.

For Valley League fans unable to access the MASN broadcast, the league announced that it will have an audio webcast on its website, www.valleyleaguebaseball.com. Haymarket Senators owner Scott Newell will handle the play-by-play duties for that broadcast with VBL Media Relations Director Scott Musa serving as the color commentator.
