Players of the Week Announced
North
Player: Jordan Steranka, Winchester. Steranka helped the Royals to enter the All-Star break on a five-game winning streak by hitting .400 with 10 hits in 25 at-bats. Steranka drove in a league-best nine runs in six games last week and also co-led the league with 20 total bases.
Pitcher:
Michael Patton, Fauquier. Patton continued this run of Gator pitchers grabbing POW honors by striking out eight in 8.0 innings of a 1-0 win over Waynesboro on July 8. Patton scattered five hits and one walk in that performance. For the year, he is now 2-1 with 29 strikeouts in 31.1 innings.
Central
Player:
Sanchez Gartman, New Market. Gartman pounded out eight hits in 20 at-bats, including a VBL-best three home runs, as the Rebels won four of six games last week. In addition to his 1.000 slugging percentage, Gartman added a double and a triple to his extra base total.
Pitcher:
Steven Thiele, New Market: Thiele picked up his first two wins of the season this past week, tossing 2.0 innings of relief in an 8-3 win over Luray on July 7 before tossing the first 7.0 innings in an 8-4 victory over Woodstock on July 11. For the week, Thiele struck out six, walked two and did not allow an earned run.
South
Player: Adam Browett, Covington. Browett had a third-best in the league 10 hits in 24 at-bats as the Lumberjacks went 3-3-1 last week.
Pitcher: Iden Nazario, Rockbridge. Nazario helped the Rapids to one of their two wins on the week by striking out seven Fauquier hitters in a 5-1 road win over the Gators on July 9. Nazario walked three and did not allow an earned run in what proved to be his first victory of the summer.
