Players of the Week Announced
North
Player: Michael Lang, Haymarket. Lang helped the Senators earn the final playoff berth of the 2009 season with a co-Valley high 10 hits in 21 at-bats. In addition to hitting .476, Lang had three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI.
Pitcher: Jack VanLeur, Fauquier. VanLeur kept his Gators in the playoff race by striking out eight in a 6-0, game two victory over Winchester on July 29. VanLeur allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter in the complete game performance.
Central:
Player: Stephen Hunt, Woodstock. Hunt led the River Bandits to four wins in its final four games and a No. 4 overall seed in the playoffs by hitting an even .500 with eight hits in 16 at-bats last week. Hunt had a double, two HR and drove in seven in those 16 at-bats.
Pitcher: Douglas Wagner, Woodstock. Wagner was the winning pitcher in two of the River Bandits four games last week, tossing 1.0 innings in a 2-1 win over New Market on July 27 and 2/3 of an inning in a 7-5 victory over Luray on July 29. Wagner made four appearances last week for the Bandits and struck out seven in 5.1 innings of work.
South
Player: Tony Caldwell, Waynesboro. Caldwell had a strong finish to his season by co-leading the Valley with a .500 average in the final week of the season. He posted eight hits in 16 at-bats with one double, one triple, one home run and six RBI.
Pitcher: Charlie McCann, Rockbridge. McCann tossed the first shutout in Rapids history by scattering five hits in 9.0 innings of a 1-0 win over Waynesboro on July 27. He struck out three and walked two in earning his first victory of the summer.
