Wild Card Watch

With the league heading into its final week, we are adding our Wild Card Standings from the right-hand rail into a feature story as well. These standings will be manually updated each night until all of the playoff participants are decided.

Notes on the 2009 Valley League Playoffs:

A. Eight teams will qualify for the playoffs.

  1. The three division winners will be seeded 1, 2 and 3 based on their overall record.
  2. The three second place finishers also qualify for the playoffs.
  3. The remaining two teams, the wild card teams, will come from the two best overall records of the remaining six teams.

B.       Should there be a tie for a division championship or a for the final playoff spot, a one-game playoff will be played between those teams to determine the divisional champion/playoff qualifier. NO TEAM WILL BE LOSE A DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP OR BE EXCLUDED FROM THE PLAYOFFS BASED ON TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES.

C. Tie-breakers should overall record be the same:

  1. Head-to-Head
  2. Divisional record

D. Teams will be seeded 1-8 without regard to division.

  1. Division champions will be 1, 2 and 3 based on overall record.
  2. Playoffs will be re-seeded following first round.

E. Playoff format

  1. First and second rounds: best-of-three games
  2. Championship Round: best-of-five
  3. Playoffs begin following the completion of all teams 44-game schedules.

Thanks to Waynesboro co-owner John Leonard and his blog, All Things Valley League, for his assistance with this project.

For the purposes of this exercise, those teams are assumed to have already qualified. If a second place team becomes tied with a third place team, both teams will be listed in the wild card standings. 2009 Standings

Rockbridge and Waynesboro have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
