Friday Night Lights

Front Royal 6, Rockbridge 2

Front Royal maintained its lead in the Valley League North standings and denied Rockbridge a bid at its third straight victory with a 6-2 win over the Rapids Friday night in Lexington.

The Cardinals pounded out 13 hits, including four from Greg VanSickler, to key the victory. James Roche homered and scored three times for Front Royal, while Jesse Henry and Brandon Brewer banged out two hits apiece. Colin McGowan went eight solid innings on the mound and allowed only one earned run to pick up the victory.

Anthony Melchionda and Graham Sullivan each had two hits for the Rapids.

Harrisonburg 2, New Market 1

The Turks picked up a Central Division win as Drew Granier struck out a season-high 13 in 8.0 innings before Thomas Nichols struck out another two in the ninth to earn the save.

Matt Townsend was 2 for 4 with a home run for the Rebels.

Waynesboro 6, Haymarket 1

Robert Sabo registered seven strikeouts in five innings and Rhett Stafford had two doubles in three at-bats as Waynesboro dispatched Haymarket 6-1.

Michael Lang had a home run among his two hits in four at-bats for the Senators.

Staunton 8, Fauquier 7

Anthony Mesa's single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth scored Ryan Norton with the winning run as the Staunton Braves defeated Fauquier, 8-7. Mesa led the Braves offense with three hits and Blake McDade, the VBL's RBI leader, was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Anders Oster had three hits for the Gators and Kevin Deese added a solo homer.

Luray 5, Covington 3, 11 inn.

Daniel Bowman went 5-for-5 with three home runs and four RBI to carry Luray past Covington 5-3 in 11 innings. He tied the game in the top of the ninth with a leadoff solo homer and hit a two-run shot in the 11^th to give the Wranglers the game-winning runs.

Lamaar Guy had two hits and an RBI for the Lumberjacks.

Winchester 4, Woodstock 1

Matt Brazis had five strikeouts in seven innings to help Winchester to its fourth straight win by downing Woodstock 4-1. Steve Sabins was 2 for 3 with an HR and a pair of runs batted in.
