Thursday Round-Up

Luray 10, Waynesboro 8

Garrett Wittles drove in six runs on a sacrifice fly, a three-run double and two-run home run to lead Luray past Waynesboro.

Drew Rucinski earned the win in relief and Daniel Bowman added three hits and a pair of runs batted in.

Alex McClure was 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Generals.

New Market 4, Winchester 2

New Market's Steve Owens cools off the hottest team in the Valley, the Winchester Royals, and improves to 6-1 in the process with a 4-2 win. Brian Burgess recorded the final four outs to post his eighth save of the summer.

Zak Messer had two hits for the Rebels and Ben Hammer three for the Royals.

Staunton 5, Rockbridge 1

David Gibson and Josh McQuade combined on a four-hitter to lead Staunton to a 5-1 victory over Rockbridge. Gibson pitched five innings allowing one run on two hits while striking outs six and walking two. McQuade pitched the final four innings to pick up his first save. He allowed no runs on two hits and struck out five. 

Kent Burford drove in two runs for the Braves and John Dishon and Donovan Huffer added two hits each.

Harrisonburg 7, Covington 6 13 inn.

Harrisonburg 4, Covington 1

Harrisonburg swept a "doubleheader" at Casey Field, stopping the Lumberjacks in 13 innings in the completion of a suspended game from July 9, 7-6, before winning the regulation game, 4-1.

Parker Brunelle's sacrifice fly won the suspended game for the Turks. Chris Sorce moved his record to 4-0 in two innings of scoreless relief.

In the second game, Harrisonburg scored three in the first and defeated the Jacks, 4-1.

Mike Schwartz had two hits and drove in two runs for the Turks and Drew Grainer moved his pitching record to 5-0.
