Two Opening Night Upsets
Covington 2, Front Royal 1
Covington won the opening game of the 2009 playoffs with a 2-1 upset over top-seeded Front Royal. Lammar Guy scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the eighth inning when he reached on an error and then came home on Sherman Johnson's single up the middle.
Danny DeSimone earned the win for the ‘Jacks by going the distance and striking out six.
JJ Muse was 2 for 4 for the victors while Anthony Ottrando did the same for Front Royal and Dan Evatt had a home run for the Cards.
Haymarket 14, Staunton 5
Haymarket made it 2-for-2 in upsets Sunday night with a 14-5 blowout victory over Staunton. The Senators pounded out 19 hits in the win, with Tom La Stella going 4-for-6 with a three-run homer and five RBIs and Scott Van Dusseldorp 5-for-6 with three RBI.
Mark Andrews pitched four solid innings in relief to pick up the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits.
Kyle Blackburn and Donovan Huffer had two hits apiece for the Braves.
