Two Upsets and One Team Clinches

Front Royal 11, Covington 4

Top-seeded Front Royal evened its series with Covington at a game apiece by downing the ‘Jacks 11-4 at Casey Field.

Steven McQuail drove in six runs for the Cards, including three on a double and another three on a three-run dinger in the ninth.

Anthony Ottrando, Jared Simon, Dan Evatt and Doug Oney all added two hits each, while Greg Van Sickler pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits and one run to get the mound win.

Lammar Guy and Richie Rodriquez both had two hits for the Jacks, while Cassidy McDaniel took the loss.

Haymarket 7, Staunton 2

Seventh-seeded Haymarket finished off No. 2 Staunton with a 7-2 victory in Haymarket Monday night.  Greg Hopkins paced the Senators with three hits in four at-bats - he also had a home run and three runs batted in. Jim Vahalik and Michael Lang added three and two hits, respectively, while Donovan Huffer led the Braves with three hits.

Matt Benedict earned the win on the mound for the hosts.

New Market 5, Luray 4, 11 inn.

The Rebels made it three upsets in four opening games with a 5-4, 11 inning win at No. 3 Luray. Matt Townsend provided the winning run for New Market with a solo home run in the top of the 11th.

Langston McKinnon had three hits for the victors.

Daniel Bowman and Alex Haitsuka had two hits each for the Wranglers.

Winchester 12, Woodstock 2

Winchester made it a perfect 4-for-4 for lower seeds when they completed a 12-2 blowout win over Woodstock at Central High School Monday evening. Robert Maddux paced the Royals with three hits - he missed the cycle by failing to get a triple.

Gabriel Ortiz was 3 for 5 to assist Steven Rivera, who allowed two runs on five hits and one walk in six innings to get the victory.

Three different River Bandits players, including Stephen Hunt, had two hits each.
