Upsets Continue
Winchester 2, Woodstock 1
Winchester posted the second upset of the 2009 playoffs by eliminating No. 4 Woodstock with a 2-1 win at Bridgeforth Field.
Jordan Steranka drove in both of the Royals runs with a two-out double into the right centerfield gap in the sixth; Steranka's hit was one of seven his club had on the night.
In the ninth, Woodstock put runners on second and third with one out when Bryam Garcia uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Shawn Ablett to come in with the River Bandits run. Stephen Hunt, who finished the night 2 for 4, attempted to score from second on that same wild pitch and was tagged out on a close play at the plate.
Garcia then struck out Cory Tilton to end Woodstock's season.
Covington 11, Front Royal 5
Eighth-seeded Covington keeps the upset streak going by eliminating top-seeded Front Royal with an 11-5, comeback victory Tuesday evening.
The Cardinals, led by James Roche and Jim Jacquot's two RBI each, led 5-2 heading into the eight only to see the ‘Jacks score four times in the eighth and four more in the ninth to pull off the upset.
Lammar Guy was 3 for 5 with five RBI and JJ Muse 2 for 5 with three RBI to pace the Covington offense.
Luray 5, New Market 4
Luray, the highest remaining seed in the 2009 VBL Playoffs, kept itself alive with a 5-4 victory over Central rival New Market.
The Wranglers and Rebels will now play on Wednesday night in Luray to decide the final team in the 2009 semi-finals.
Drew Martinez and Pablo Bermudez had two of Luray's five hits and scored a pair of runs apiece to help the squad even the series at a game each.
