The 2010 game was hosted by the Harrisonburg Turks on Eagle Field at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium on the campus of James Madison University.

The North, comprised of the Winchester, Front Royal, Woodstock, Luray and Haymarket, scored three runs in both the first and second innings before tacking on a single run in the fourth and two more in the ninth.

The South, made up of New Market, Harrisonburg, Rockbridge, Staunton, Waynesboro and Covington, was held without a hit until Harrisonburg’s Shaun Cooper tripled to center with two outs in the fourth.

By that time, the damage was done as the North held a 7-0 advantage.

Winchester’s Cory Spangenberg, who was named as his squad’s MVP, did most of that damage with a 3 for 3 evening that included two doubles and three runs scored.

Spangenberg held off the game with a single to center and scored a Nick Rickles (Luray) sacrifice fly to right five hitters into the contest.

One batter later, Haymarket’s Yoandy Barroso plated what proved to be the game-winning run with a two-run single through the left side.

Barroso drove home both teammate Rudy Flores and Woodstock’s Mike Garza, who had reached via a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively.

Garza gave Spangenberg a run for his money for MVP honors by with a two-run double in the second.

The North finished with 10 hits on the evening, including three by Spangenberg and two from Front Royal’s James Roche.

Cooper, who drove in a run as well as getting the South’s first hit, was the South MVP.

The South had six hits in the contest.

Cody Weiss (Luray) walked one and struck out one in one inning of work to get the win.

Marcus Broadwater (Rockbridge) was tagged with the loss after allowing the three runs on two hits, one walk and one hit batsmen in the first.

Notes: Luray’s Jonathan Griffin won the Home Run Derby by one dinger over Front Royal’s Pete Greskoff. Griffin hit seven home runs in the first round, three in the second, tied Greskoff with one HR in the opening round of the finals and then won it by hitting two in the championship round…. Andrew Tourcy (Waynesboro) bested teammate Terrell Thompson by 2/10 of a second to win the 60-yard dash. Tourcy ran a 6.5... The league will play the Cal Ripken Sr. League Wednesday at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland in the second-ever Mid-Atlantic Classic. The VBL roster for that game will be announced Monday…
