Championship Series Info
STAUNTON, Va. – Valley League President Dave Biery announced a format change Monday for its upcoming Lineweaver Cup championship series.
The league’s championship series, scheduled for a best-of-five format, is to be shortened to a best-of-three.
The VBL, an 11-team summer wood bat league that plays under NCAA rules, must have all of its contests concluded by August 15 as per NCAA mandate.
“With just six playing dates available between tomorrow (the first possible day of the championship series) and August 15, I don’t think we have enough time to conclude a best-of-five series,” Biery said.
“We had some rainouts last week that extended the first round of the playoffs, and now we are in a position of not having any rain dates for the championship series.
“I believe the best avenue for the league is to play the championship series as a best-of-three. The players are used to this and we have done this in the past when the schedule dictated it.
“I am confident that this is the best scenario for our players, our fans and our teams.”
Three teams: Luray, Haymarket and Front Royal, remain in the playoffs. Luray has clinched a spot in the championship while Haymarket, the regular season champion, can join the Wranglers series with a win at Front Royal Monday evening.
