Award Winners Announced

STAUNTON, Va. - The Valley Baseball League closed the book on its 2010 season by announcing its major award winners Sunday evening.

Winchester's Cory Spangenberg grabs Most Valuable Player honors, Taylor Sandefur from Waynesboro earns Cy Young accolades and Ryan Fecteau turns Haymarket's regular season championship into a Coach of the Year nod.

Spangenberg led the VBL in batting average, hits, runs scored and on-base percentage while finishing second in total bases and stolen bases.

Spangenberg finished the year with a .399 average after hitting .402 during a regular season in which he played every inning of every game.

Sandefur was a league leading 7-0 with a 2.26 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 59.2 regular season innings take the Cy Young Award as the league's top pitcher.

He led the league wins, was third in earned run average and had nearly a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Fecteau, who piloted the Senators to a league best 30 regular-season wins one year after capturing the Lineweaver Cup, earns Coach of the Year honors.

The Senators clinched the top seed in the playoffs with a week to play in the regular season and had two winning streaks of at least six games this summer. They also finished the year with a co-league-best 33 overall victories.

Haymarket was particularly dominant in July, winning 16 of 21 games, including a stretch of 11 of 12 in the final two weeks of the month.

The honorees were chosen by selected members of the media covering the VBL this summer.
