Players of the Week Announced

STAUNTON, Va. - The northern and southern extremes of the Valley League earn Player and Pitcher of the Week honors in selections announced Monday by the VBL office.

Winchester's Steve Sabins earns VBL Player of the Week honors while Covington's Benny Mejia has been named as Pitcher of the Week.

Sabins, from Embry-Riddle, hit a second-best-in-the-league .471 this past week with eight hits in 17 at-bats. He had two doubles, two home runs and a league-best eight RBI to help the Royals to within one-half-game of league leaders Haymarket and Luray.

Mejia was nearly unhittable in a 2-1 win over Rockbridge on Saturday evening. Mejia, from Seton Hall, scattered three hits and one unearned run while striking out 10 and walking just two in the victory.

Mejia was one of three starters on the week to have a 0.00 ERA.
