Saturday Night Fever
Saturday brought the first full night of action in the 2010 Valley League season.
Winchester 4, Covington 1
Visiting Winchester scored three runs in the second inning to key a 4-1 victory at Covington. Cory Spangenberg was 3 for 4 on the evening with two RBI, including one in that three-run second.
Andrew Longley had two hits for the Lumberjacks.
Front Royal 11, Luray 4
Visiting Front Royal won its second straight game to start the 2010 VBL season with an 11-4 win at Luray. Kevin Brashears, Drew Gadaire, Pete Greskoff and Blake Boyce homered for the Cardinals while Ryan Lashley had three hits for the Wranglers.
Haymarket 9, Woodstock 8, 12 inn.
Haymarket storms back into the game with a six-run ninth before winning in the 12th over visiting Woodstock.
Jimmy Dowdell won it with an RBI single in the 12th while DH Alex Murari drove in four runs with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth.
Mike Garza had three hits for the River Bandits.
Harrisonburg 12, Rockbridge 11, 10 inn.
Shaun Cooper hit a solo HR to lead off the Harrisonburg 10th inning Saturday night and give the Turks a 12-11 victory over host Rockbridge.
Catcher Tyler Carpenter had four hits for the victors with Andrew Siano banging out three for the Rapids.
Waynesboro 2, New Market 0
The Generals score once in both the seventh and eighth innings while holding New Market to just two hits in posting the shutout victory. Jon Clinard and Matt Malloy each drove in runs for Waynesboro.
