Luray Wins Championship
FRONT ROYAL - The Luray Wranglers claimed the 2010 Lineweaver Cup by finishing off a sweep of Front Royal with a 4-0 victory Thursday evening at Bing Crosby Stadium.
Cody Weiss tossed a gem for the Wranglers (33-18), scattering seven hits and one walk in seven innings while striking out eight.
Drew Rusinski was perfect over the final two innings to shut the door on the Cardinals (27-25) and return the Cup to Luray.
The Wranglers got of all of the offense they would need in the second inning when Jonathan Murphy led off with a single to left center and was brought home one batter later when David Villasuso blasted a home run, his fourth of the summer, to make it 2-0.
Jeff Jefferson and Villasuso had RBIs in the third and sixth innings, respectively, to provide the final margin of victory.
Weiss didn't need the extra help, however, as he allowed just two runners into scoring position after the fourth inning. He and Rusinski retired 10 of the final 11 Front Royal batters in order and faced the minimum over the last three innings.
Josh Hoguet (4-3) took the loss for the Cards, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in 4 2/3. Hoguet struck out six.
Murphy and Villasuso both were 3 for 4 for the victors with Villasuso driving in three.
Pete Greskoff and Sean Jamieson combined for five of Front Royal's seven hits.
