Covington Tops New Market
COVINGTON, Va. - Host Covington scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first Monday night to sneak past New Market 1-0 in the only VBL contest of the evening.
Giuseppe Papaccio led off the 'Jacks (9-10) first with a single to center and after stealing second, moved to third on a Rebels (5-14) error at first base.
Matt Martinez then drove Papaccio home with a single to left center.
Jake Ramsey (2-0) made this offense stand up, scattering four hits and two walks against nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings to pick up the victory.
Troy Barton and Casey Selsor worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the victory.
New Market starter Cameron Ward (1-2) was nearly as strong, allowing just the unearned run on six hits in 7.0 innings. Ward had seven punchouts.
Papaccio was the only player with multiple hits. He was 2 for 4 from his leadoff spot.
All four of the Rebels hits were singles.
