Winchester 12, New Market 5
Winchester uses an eight-run first inning to key a 12-5 victory over host New Market. The Royals also become the second team in the Valley to clinch a playoff berth thanks to their win, combined with Woodstock’s loss at Rockbridge.
Kevin Brashears and Cory Spangenberg were both 3 for 5 with two RBI for Winchester; each had two hits in that eight-run first.
Jason Coker and Franco Ramirez had two hits each for the Rebels.
Covington 2, Staunton 1
Four Covington pitchers combined on a 4-hitter Wednesday to lead the Lumberjacks to a 2-1 victory over Staunton.
Starting pitcher Robby Scott worked the first six innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run to earn the win. He struck out six and walked five. Jake Ramsey recorded the final five outs, striking out four of the five hitters he faced, to get the save.
Brandon Turner was 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the ‘Jacks offense.
Joey Cuda took the loss, working 5.1 innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking three.
Waynesboro 4, Front Royal 3
Jarryd Summers pitched 7.0 innings, giving up five
hits, three earned runs, and striking out nine to help Waynesboro
to a 4-3 home win over Front Royal.
Alan Stoupa led the Generals with three hits and Sean Jamieson had three RBI for the Cards.
Rockbridge 8, Woodstock 6
Rockbridge keeps its fleeting playoff hopes alive with an 8-6
comeback victory over Woodstock.
Dillon Way, Chris Love and JC Shepperd all had two hits for the Rapids.
Derek Vigoa was 2 for 4 with three RBI for the ‘Bandits.
Luray 4, Harrisonburg 0
Luray keeps hold of third place in the Valley with a 4-0 shutout
victory at Harrisonburg. Joel Capote and Nick Rickles had two hits
each for the Wranglers with Capote also scoring twice.
Tucker Jensen struck out eight in eight inning to earn the victory.
Austin Erb had one of the Turks four hits.
