WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock River Bandits announced Wednesday that they have hired Phil Betterly as their coach for the 2012 season.

Betterly, who is an assistant coach at Frostburg (Md.) State University, comes to Woodstock after spending the summer of 2011 as an assistant coach for the Florence Red Wolves of the Coastal Plains League.

In 2010, the Methodist University graduate was an assistant coach for the New Market Rebels in the VBL.  Betterly has also worked numerous college camps, showcases and clinics throughout the Mid-Atlantic States.

At Frostburg, he works with hitters and catchers as well as assisting with the recruitment of players.

Prior to going to FSU, Betterly served as a volunteer assistant coach at Methodist University for the 2010 season. A 2009 MU graduate, Betterly earned three letters for the Monarchs as a catcher, outfielder and designated hitter.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Methodist University and is currently working on his Master’s degree in administration and supervision.

Betterly is originally from Bristow, Virginia and a Brentsville District High School graduate.
Woodstock finished the 2011 season with a 20-24 record and was eliminated from playoff contention on the penultimate day of the season.
