Semi-Finals Set

No. 2 Winchester 4, No. 7 Staunton 3

WINCHESTER - Second-seeded Winchester advances to the semi-finals with a 4-3 home victory over No. 7 Staunton.

The Royals will face No. 5 Covington and will host game one Tuesday evening at 7.

First baseman Nathan Minnich provided the winning run for Winchester (31-16) with a leadoff home run in the eighth.

Minnich's blast, off of Braves reliever Austin Adams, gave Winchester the lead for the second time in the contest.

The Royals scored two runs in the second (on a Matt Snyder two-run dinger) before both teams registered one run in the fourth.

Snyder was responsible for that run as well, hitting a solo shot with one out.

Staunton (22-25) originally got on the board with a Matt Dickason RBI single in the fourth and tied it with a pair in the seventh.

Derek Justice and Dickason led off with a pair of singles and were sacrificed to third and second, respectively.

Following an intentional walk and a strikeout, Josh Tutweiler laced a two-run single to right center to tie the game.

Winchester then got the winning run thanks to Minnich in its next at-bat.

Matt Brazis was the winner with 2 2/3 of scoreless relief. He struck out four and allowed one hit.

No. 5 Covington 4, No. 4 New Market 1, 10 inn.

NEW MARKET - Visiting Covington registers the second upset victory of the quarterfinal round with a 4-1, 10 inning win over New Market.

The victory puts the 'Jacks into the semi-finals against No. 2 Winchester beginning Tuesday night in Winchester.

Covington (22-23) took the early lead on an Andrew Kirks solo home run in the second and held a 1-0 lead until the ninth thanks to the strong pitching performance of starter Sean Tighe.

Tighe went 8 1/3 innings, striking out 10, before allowing the tying run with one out in the ninth.

Antonio Calloway scored that tying run for the Rebels by reaching on a one-out double and then racing home on Josh Haley's single to left center.

Unfortunately for the Rebel Park crowd, the 'Jacks had an answer.

Ryan Dineen led off the Covington 10th and after a sacrifice, a pair of intentional walks and an out, Matt Shoemaker had a two-out double into the left-center gap to give the Lumberjacks the winning run.

New Market had one batter reach base in the bottom of the 10th.

Alex Adami was the winning pitcher in relief. He struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work.
