Upsets Reign
Rockbridge 5, Harrisonburg 2 - Game 1 (Rockbridge leads best-of-three 1-0)
HARRISONBURG - Visiting Rockbridge registered the first upset of the 2011 VBL semi-finals with a 5-2 victory over top-seeded Harrisonburg.
The Rapids (24-23) can close out the best-of-three series with a home win over Harrisonburg (34-13) Wednesday evening.
Rockbridge led the entire way of the series opener, scoring four runs on just one hit in the top of the first inning.
Turks starter Niko Spezial (3-1) walked the first three hitters of the game and all three ended up scoring.
No. 3 hitter Zach Leach ended up scoring what proved to be the game-winning run as Harrisonburg threw the ball away on a failed pickoff attempt at second base.
The Rapids were held to just five hits on the night with Tyler Molinaro collecting two along with an RBI and a run scored.
The Turks got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth and added their final run in the seventh.
Jay Gonzalez, Robert Perucki and Casey Goss all had two hits for Harrisonburg.
Clinton Freeman (2-3) scattered nine hits and struck out four in the complete game victory.
Covington 12, Winchester 4 - Game 1 (Covington leads best-of-three 1-0)
WINCHESTER - Just moments after Rockbridge finished off Harrisonburg, Covington posted the second upset of the night with a 12-4 win over Winchester at Bridgeforth Field.
The 'Jacks (24-24) can advance to the championship series with a win in Wednesday's 7:30 contest at Casey Field.
With the scored tied at 3-3 following a three-run third for the Royals (31-17), Covington pulled away with two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
The Lumberjacks completed their offense with three more runs in the eighth.
Covington had 15 hits on the night, including at least two each by the Nos. 1-5 batters in the lineup and one each from Nos. 6-8.
Nick Hladek and Ryan Sullivan, the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters, each had three hits and combined for six RBI. Sullivan missed hitting for the cycle by failing to hit a home run, but drove in runners in his first three at-bats.
Winchester, which had 12 hits of its own, got a three-run HR from designated hitter Matt Snyder in the third.
The dinger is Snyder's third in the last two games.
Gibby Briones had three hits to back up Snyder.
Chris Walker earned his first win of the summer by throwing the first 6.0 innings. Walker (1-0) allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks in 6.0 innings. He also struck out six.
