Championship Round Set
Covington and Rockbridge both finished off semi-final round series victories Wednesday evening and are set to meet for the VBL championship.
The two teams will meet in a best-of-three championship series beginning Thursday night in Covington.
The Lumberjacks will host games one and three (if necessary) while Rockbridge hosts game two on Friday night.
All three games are set for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
Rockbridge 5, Harrisonburg 3 (Rockbridge wins series 2-0)
Host Rockbridge will play for the 2011 VBL championship after finishing off a sweep of top-seeded Harrisonburg with a 5-3 victory over the Turks Wednesday evening.
The Rapids (25-23) erased a 3-1 deficit with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to eliminate Harrisonburg (34-14).
With one out in the sixth, Brody Greer, Tyler Molinaro and Andrew Montague all reached base safely on consecutive at-bats.
Montague, who scored the final run of the game, drove in Molinaro with a single before Mike Perez doubled home Montague with what proved to be the final run.
Greer scored on Molinaro's single combined with an outfield error.
The Turks did all of their damage in the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits and three walks. Jay Gonzalez had the only RBI of the frame.
Montague was the winning pitcher with 4.0 innings of relief work - he struck out five, walked one and allowed just two hits.
Justin Van Grouw was the loser. He falls to 4-3 on the summer after giving up five runs on six hits and three walks.
Covington 3, Winchester 1 (Covington wins series 2-0)
Fifth-seeded Covington joins Rockbridge in the 2011 VBL Championship Series with a 3-1, game two victory over No. 2 Winchester.
'Jacks starter Troy Barton threw 8.0 innings of three-hit ball to push Covington (25-24) past the Royals (31-18).
Barton (2-2) allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight. Alex Adami gave up two hits in the ninth, but had two strikeouts to post the save.
Ryan Sullivan plated the game-winning run for the 'Jacks with a two-run HR to center in the third. He also drove in the first run of the game for the victors with a first inning single.
Nathan Minnich had Winchester's lone RBI - his sacrifice fly plated Brady Wilson with the game's first run. Wilson led off the contest with a double to right center.
Wilson and Alex Lakatos each had two hits for the Royals, who were held to five on the night.
Sullivan finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBI for Covington.
Lincoln Rassi (3-1) struck out 10 in the complete game effort for Winchester.
