Rockbridge Evens Series
LEXINGTON - Host Rockbridge forces a decisive third game of the 2011 VBL Championship Series with a 5-1 victory in game two Friday night in Lexington.
The Rapids (26-24) and 'Jacks (26-25) will play a final game at 7 p.m. Saturday on Casey Field in Covington to decide the 2011 championship.
Rockbridge scored two runs in the first and rode a strong pitching performance from Jordan Elliott to even the series at one game apiece.
Elliott allowed one run on seven hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings before turning it over to Kerry Doane for the final five outs.
Elliott struck out five and Doane two in finishing off the Lumberjacks.
George Piccirilli, who along with Zach Leach had two hits for the victors, led off the Rapids first with a double down the left field line before moving to third on a wild pitch.
This allowed him to score the game's first run on a Doane groundout to second.
Doane started the game at designated hitter before moving to the mound in the eighth.
A second wild pitch by Covington starter Sean Tighe led to Leach scoring the eventual game-winning run with two outs.
Rockbridge added one run in the sixth before the 'Jacks got on the board with one in the eighth.
The Rapids answered with two in the bottom of that same frame to close out the game's scoring.
Lovick and Doane both had two RBI for Rockbridge.
Nick Hladek and Andrew Kirks both had two hits for Covington.
